Takeaways from the Global Initiatives Program 1/31: A Nonpartisan State of the World Report Featuring Award-Winning Journalist Terry McCarthy

Last Monday, the Poly community was lucky to engage in a conversation with  Emmy award winning journalist Terry McCarthy. McCarthy discussed current international issues, his experiences as a foreign correspondent across the globe, and the role of news and media in today’s society.

Something that deeply resonated with me from McCarthy’s talk was his emphasis on the importance of non-partisan journalism as we navigate a world where partisanship is becoming increasingly more and more normal. I appreciated that he offered advice as to how we, as news consumers, can build a non partisan understanding of a current event or news story. McCarthy talked about how we should always seek all sides of a story and try to look at the news through multiple different lenses and media sources. This point of view really reminded me of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's "The Danger of a Single Story", and I was able to draw parallels between partisan news sourcing and stereotyping.

Overall, this was a very worthwhile event in which I came out with a better understanding of how to navigate understanding news, journalism, and current events.

  1. Anna, what a thought provoking night. You seemed to hone in on "McCarthy talked about how we should always seek all sides of a story and try to look at the news through multiple different lenses and media sources. " Why else do we need to look at many lenses? Why is it important? crucial? Think about his emphasis on the relationship between interviewer and interviewee. What other things did you gain? I see six sentences... a solid start and I'm sure you have more ideas/responses to that night.
